Anna Marie Behrns, age 91, formerly of Nehawka, died at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Bellevue on Tuesday, June 24, 2008.

Anna Marie was born Nov. 12, 1916, near Avoca, the daughter of Henry A. and Elisa A. (Kohl) Straub. She attended grade school at District 96 and 4. She attended her freshman year at St. Bernard’s Academy in Nebraska City then transferred to Avoca High School where she graduated in 1934.

Before Anna Marie was married, she worked in Nebraska City at the Hesteds’ and Wessels’ stores, worked for Dr. Kenner, and then worked for a family in Omaha. In the early 1960s she worked part-time in the X-ray department at St. Mary’s Hospital in Nebraska City.

On April 24, 1941, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Anna Marie was married to Leslie J. Behrns; and to this union four children were born.

Anna Marie was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Holy Trinity Guild. She also was a member of the Four Corners Club.

After 32 years of marriage, Leslie died on July 23, 1973. Also preceding her in death were her parents; a brother, Leo Straub; two sisters and their husbands, Gertrude and Otto Kreifels, and Cecelia and Francis Straub; two sisters-in-law and husbands, Helen and John Sugden, and Florence and Alan Cooper.

She is survived by her children: Edward and wife Annie of Nehawka; Barbara and husband Bob Vaughn of Bellevue; Roger and wife Linda of Louisville; Maxine and husband Dale Schatz of Auburn; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 30, 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church near Avoca. Burial followed at Holy Trinity Cemetery.

Memorials may be given in her memory to Holy Trinity Catholic Church, or the family’s choice.
