Doris Jeanne (Schlanker) Schmidt, 84, died in Eagle on Saturday, July 12, 2008. Doris was born Feb. 2, 1924, in Elmwood to William J. and Mabel (Newlin) Schlanker. She graduated from Elmwood High School in 1941 and married Donald L. Schmidt on July 17, 1943. Doris and Don had two children, Milton and Carole. She worked at Cushman Motors, served in the Navy Waves during World War II, and retired as the head cook at Eagle Elementary in 1996 after 41 years of service.
Doris was active in the Eagle community, where she lived since 1946. She was a member of the Eagle United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Eagle Legion Auxiliary 8 and 40, Flatwater Waves, and treasurer of Eagle Legion Post 197. Doris was the 2000 Eagle Days Grand Marshal, served on the election commission and was a lifelong blood donor. She was an award-winning baker of breads, cookies and pies at the Lancaster County Fair and Nebraska State Fair, where she also volunteered at the 4-H building. She enjoyed making favors and poppies for veterans and sewed baby blankets, school bags and baby gowns for United Methodist missions.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Milton and Linda Schmidt, Lincoln; daughter and son-in-law, Carole and Scott Johnson, Walton; grandchildren, Craig R. Schmidt, Shannon J. Schmidt, Lindsey M. Johnson, Emily Billington and husband David; sisters, Eleanor Stratton, Lincoln; Maxine Buell, Lincoln; Shirley Wenzel, Elmwood; and Norma Hall, Elmwood; nieces and nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by parents; husband; sister, Julia Armstrong; and brother, Billie Schlanker.
Funeral service: 10 a.m. Thursday, July 17, Roper and Sons Chapel, 4300 “O” St.; The Rev. Chuck Cornwell officiating. Burial in Eagle. Memorials to the Eagle United Methodist Church or Eagle Fire and Rescue. Visitation: 2=9 p.m. Wednesday with family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m., funeral home.
