James “Arley” Hill, 84, Elmwood, died Saturday, July 19, 2008, at home.

He was born in Elmwood on Sept. 3, 1923, the son of the late Grover and Etta (Schlanker) Hill, and was a graduated from Elmwood High School with the Class of 1940. He served in the U.S. Army as a TEC 5 in World War II with the 235th Engineer Combat Battalion. James was an Elmwood farmer and handyman all of his life. He was a member of Elmwood Christian Church Disciple of Christ, Elder Emeritus; member of American Legion Post 247, Past Commander; and Elmwood Cemetery Board member.

He is survived by his wife, Joann (Ruhga). They were married 52 years in June. Survivors also include their four children: daughter, Brenda Vogt of Elmwood; daughter, Becky, wife of Steve Costello, of Gothenburg; son, Jim, husband of Patty Wolcott, of Elmwood; and son, Tom Hill of Lincoln; eight grandchildren: Saina and Danae; Ben, Tim and Christopher; Brennan, Madison and Arleigh; a sister, Fern Shuler, Clinton, Md.; many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. Preceded in death by his parents; brother, Body; and sister, Delores Rieke.

Funeral service was Tuesday, July 22, at Elmwood Christian Church with Pastor Mark Sheldon officiating. Nancy Anderson was organist, Janet Sorensen was vocalist and Michael Hansen played taps at the conclusion of the service. A private interment was conducted at Elmwood Cemetery; Sons of American Legion Post 247 provided military rites. Pallbearers wer Don Zoz, Greg Meyer, Ben Vogt, Tim Vogt, Christopher Vogt And Brennan Costello.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Elmwood Fire and Rescue, Christian Church or Community Center.
