SPRINGFIELD - A four-run fourth inning proved to be enough for Waverly to stop Plattsmouth's district tournament run Tuesday night 7-3.

The top-seeded Vikings coupled their five hits with five walks and four Plattsmouth errors to advance to the district title game Wednesday night. The Junior Legion team played Gretna for the championship.

Things looked positive for Plattsmouth early on when the Blue Devils scored twice on two hits in the bottom of the first. Waverly tied the game the next inning on a wild throw past third base and a misplayed fly ball in center field.

Waverly used three hits and two Plattsmouth errors in the fourth to take a commanding 6-2 lead. Brett Sales hit the first pitch from Blue Devil reliever Darren Eymann to the left-field fence to start the inning, and a wild throw to second base by third baseman Brandon Anstey and a high throw to first by shortstop Andrew Mitteis brought home a pair of runs. An infield hit by Andrew Toy and soft single by Ryan Hughes plated the other two Viking runs.

Waverly scored an additional run in the seventh on a RBI single by Mitchell Schmidt. Mitteis beat out an infield hit to score Kyle Green from third base for the game's final run.

Plattsmouth starting pitcher Derek Sutton walked three and gave up one hit in three innings of work. Eymann, who had tossed a complete-game victory over Springfield the day before, allowed four runs and three hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Greg Harris kept the Blue Devils close by striking out three and allowing four hits in 2 2/3 innings on the mound. Harris retired the side in both the fifth and sixth innings before giving up a solo run in the seventh. Mitteis relieved Harris two batters into the seventh and allowed one hit and had one strikeout.

Hughes gave up five hits and pitched all seven innings for Waverly.

Plattsmouth finished its season 19-7. Waverly improved its record to 16-2.
